There’s nothing quite like starting your morning with the perfect cup of coffee.
No matter how good your home brew gets, there’s always something special about visiting a local café with expertly roasted beans, passionate baristas, and a warm, welcoming vibe. That’s exactly what we offer at First Harvest Coffee — your friendly neighbourhood coffee shop Nerang, located in the heart of Highland Park on the Gold Coast.
We’re more than just a cafe. With a beautiful, family-friendly playground, artisan pastries, and nourishing meals served seven days a week, we’re proud to be the go-to gathering spot for locals who love great coffee and great company.
In this blog, we’ll share expert tips on how to make café-quality coffee at home — but we’ll also tell you why no home brew can ever truly replace the experience of enjoying a cup at First Harvest Coffee.

Start With the Right Beans
The foundation of any good coffee starts with quality beans. Choose freshly roasted, specialty-grade coffee beans — ideally from a local roaster that cares about origin, roast profile, and flavour. At First Harvest Coffee, we use hand-selected beans from ethical sources that are roasted to perfection. Our team can even help you choose the right beans to take home.
Tip: Store your beans in an airtight container in a cool, dry place — not in the fridge or freezer. Grind just before brewing for maximum freshness.
Master Your Brewing Method
Different brewing methods bring out different characteristics in coffee. Whether you use an espresso machine, Aeropress, French press, or pour-over, here’s how to level up your home brew:
- Espresso Machine: Use a fine grind and aim for 18–20g of coffee per double shot. Tamp evenly and extract for around 25–30 seconds.
- French Press: Use a coarse grind and steep for 4 minutes before plunging.
- Pour Over: Use a medium grind and pour water slowly in circular motions, letting it bloom first.
- Aeropress: Ideal for a quick, smooth brew. Experiment with brew times between 1.5–2 minutes.
Pro Tip: Invest in a digital scale and timer to control your ratios and consistency.
Water Quality Matters
Great beans and perfect grind? Don’t overlook your water. Tap water can often carry unwanted flavours or too much mineral content. Use filtered water heated to around 92–96°C (just off the boil) for best results.
Froth Milk Like a Barista
If you’re a latte or flat white fan, frothed milk can make or break your brew. If you don’t have a steam wand at home, you can use a milk frother or even a French press to create microfoam.
Milk Frothing Tips:
- Use cold, fresh milk (full cream for best texture).
- Avoid overheating – 60–65°C is perfect.
- Tap and swirl your jug after frothing to create that silky-smooth texture.
Or — better yet — come in and let one of our baristas at First Harvest make it for you!
